Toen we aan het brainstormen waren over een potentiële bestemming voor onze eerste verre reis met Emiel, kwam Curaçao al vrij snel boven drijven. Niet alleen is het er altijd mooi weer en kan je het via een rechtstreekse vlucht bereiken, het was namelijk ook de droombestemming van Aurélie. Robin was al onmiddellijk verkocht, en zag zichzelf zijn vriendin hier al ten huwelijk vragen, dus duurde het niet lang voor alles geregeld was.
Onze eerste uitstap daar ter plaatse, was het verkennen van de hoofdstad, Willemstad. Na een vermoeiende wandeling van 8km door de broeiende hitte, was het tijd om te genieten van een drankje in één van de plaatselijke lounge bars.
Een paar dagen later, nadat Robin zijn vriendin ten huwelijk had gevraagd, vonden we het nog eens tijd voor een uitstapje. We zochten een relatief kort wandelpad, om de draagzak van Emiel eens te testen, en kwamen zo bij het pittoreske Tortuga Trail. Op mijn verjaardag bezochten we het Curaçao Sea Aquarium, en sloten we af met een diner en een partij-tje midget-golf in het beroemde landhuis Brakkeput Mei Mei.
Toen was het eindelijk tijd voor het serieuzere werk: de beklimming van de Sint-Christoffelberg, met zijn 372 meter de hoogste berg van het eiland. De eerste helft was een zwoele, hete, vermoeiende, steile wandeling. Daarna werd het echter al snel een echte beklimming, met enkele heel steile stukken, waar ik zelfs mijn camera voor op heb geborgen. Na een 2 tal uren klimmen bereikten we dan toch eindelijk de top, met als beloning een prachtig wijd panorama over het gehele eiland. Ons Emieltje leek het allemaal wel best OK te vinden, en heeft zelfs een uiltje geknapt tijdens de klim in het harnas op de buik van zijn peter, Robin.
Na een snelle lunch, en de batterijtjes opladen, in het beroemdste restaurant van het eiland, Jaanchies, was er nog net genoeg tijd voor een blitz bezoek aan het Shete Boka National Park.
Op het einde van onze mooie reis, besloten we nog even een korte uitstap te maken in de Hofi Pastor. Deze tuin is eigenlijk een compleet verwilderd landgoed, waar je via een aantal paden door de jungle kan wandelen.
